Scholarships
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is pleased to provide scholarship opportunities to students across its many programs, both undergraduate and graduate. The deadline to apply for all scholarships is March 15.
Undergraduates—please make sure to check all the scholarships for which you are eligible. These include scholarships for:
All Majors: These scholarships are open to any student in the college who meets the scholarship criteria.

Your Minor Program(s): Some scholarships are open to minors as well as majors! If the scholarship does not specify “majors”, you are eligible.

All College of Arts and Sciences Majors
Helen F. Pope Memorial Scholarship (amount varies): Graduate and undergraduate scholarships that recognize and encourage the commitment and leadership of students who are active participants in the IUSB Civil Rights Heritage Center ("CRHC"). Preference given to African American/Black, Hispanic, or women students. Recipients shall have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, demonstrate financial need, and agree to take a leadership role in a CRHC program each semester.
Lester C. Lamon Scholarship (amount varies): Undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate an understanding of the value of personal responsibility and commitment to community service through the Civil Rights Heritage Center. The Scholarship will be given to participants in the Civil Rights Heritage Center, with a record of satisfactory academic performance as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 2.8 for undergraduate students, and a minimum GPA of 3.3 for graduate students.
Lynn R. Williams Dean’s Scholarship (amount varies): Scholarships for full-time undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences with a declared major in Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, or Computer Science and Informatics. Recipients must have completed a minimum of 48 credit hours by the end of the Spring academic semester and have a GPA of 3.5 or above. The scholarships may be used for tuition and/or books, and any other academic related expenses.
J. Wesley & Roberta Robbins Scholarship (minimum $500): This scholarship supports a junior or senior in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU South Bend who has a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to students who exhibit an interest in the study of philosophy, as demonstrated by their course work and stated research interests.
Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarships by Academic Program
Leonard E. and Deana C. James Scholarship for Majors in Social Sciences (amount varies): Supports undergraduate students majoring in any social science degree program at IU South Bend who have achieved high academic standing, manifested personal integrity, and demonstrated promise for future professional success as determined by the Scholarship Committee.
Cadet Kelly Dulcet Memorial Scholarship (minimum $500): Supports students at IUSB who have a declared major in Criminal Justice with the intent of entering the field of law enforcement after graduation. Must be a full-time student at IUSB with sophomore, junior, or senior status; have a minimum GPA of 3.0; provide proof of household income as demonstrated on W-2 from prior tax year. Applicants must provide an essay with application including career goals, motivations for pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice (law enforcement), time frame for achieving Criminal Justice degree, and why the student should be the recipient of this Scholarship. The Scholarship will be for tuition and fees and will be renewable for up to three (3) years. Students must reapply each year to be eligible for Scholarship renewal. The Scholarship will be based on academic performance and academic merit, as determined by the selection committee.
Officer Paul R. Deguch Memorial Scholarship (amount varies): This award is for residents of St. Joseph County who have a 2.5 GPA and are pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at IU South Bend.
Walt Risler Memorial Scholarship (amount varies): This award is for scholarships for Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) students with a major, concentration, or minor in Criminal Justice.
Gerald T. Bryant Bicentennial English Scholarship (amount varies): This award supports scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in any degree program offered by the English Department at IU South Bend.
The Bender Scholars Program (amount varies): Awarded to a junior or senior with a major in the sciences or humanities. Recipients will have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a demonstrated record and continuing involvement in community service and leadership on campus. Recipients must be full time students enrolled in 12 credits or more each semester of the academic year while holding the scholarship. Recipients in the junior year are eligible to reapply during their senior year.
Eileen Bender Endowed Scholarship (minimum $500): Supports graduate students enrolled in the Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) campus pursuing a master’s degree in women’s studies, modern American literature, or English. Recipient(s) must have a minimum GPA of 3.3, demonstrate active involvement in one or more community activities, intend to teach at the collegiate or higher level, and be willing to participate in teaching excellence programs such as Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching (FACET).
Francis & Florence Yeandel Scholarship (amount varies): This scholarship supports students in the General Studies Program at Indiana University South Bend.
Ted Hengesbach Scholarship (amount varies): This award will be used to support recipients enrolled in the General Studies program at Indiana University South Bend. Preference will be given to a non-traditional student, returning to the classroom after at least a five-year absence, with financial need.
Noah & Allene James Scholarship for Majors in History or Political Science (amount varies): Supports scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in any history or political science degree program at IU South Bend who have achieved high academic standing, manifested personal integrity, and demonstrated promise for future professional success.
Jennifer Jo Szendrey Memorial Graduate MLS Scholarship(amount varies): This scholarship supports graduate students enrolled in the Master of Liberal Studies (“MLS”) program at Indiana University South Bend. Recipient(s) must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Applicants must submit an essay of no more than 250 words demonstrating applicant’s activism or community involvement.
J. Wesley & Roberta Robbins Scholarship (minimum $500): This scholarship supports a junior or senior in the “College of Arts and Sciences” at IU South Bend who has a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to students who exhibit an interest in the study of philosophy, as demonstrated by their course work and stated research interests. J. Wesley Robbins joined the IU South Bend faculty in 1967 and was co-founder of the philosophy department, in which he served for 36 years. Roberta Robbins is an alumna of the IU South Bend School of Business and Economics. She served for a number of years on the Alumni Board.
Noah & Allene James Scholarship for Majors in History or Political Science (amount varies): Supports scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in any history or political science degree program at IU South Bend who have achieved high academic standing, manifested personal integrity, and demonstrated promise for future professional success.
Rick Hunt Political Science Scholarship (amount varies): Supports a scholarship for an undergraduate student studying political science in the Department of Political Science at IU South Bend who has a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale and is involved with the American Democracy Project, a student organization, or has demonstrated civic engagement.
Edwin Joseph Sustainability Studies Scholarship (minimum $1000): This scholarship is for undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Sustainability Studies at IU South Bend who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have completed at least 6 credits in sustainability studies.
Keen Robinson Sustain the Future Scholarship (amount varies): This scholarship is for one undergraduate student in the IU South Bend Sustainability Studies program who has a minimum 2.5 GPA, graduated from a high school in the Michiana region, and has a professed commitment to sustainability. Because, as part of its mission, Indiana University is committed to diversity, special consideration will be given to underrepresented populations, including but not limited to financially challenged students, and/or students with diverse cultural experiences. The Donors have a preference for a student who has demonstrated financial need. The Scholarship will be renewable for up to four years provided the recipient continues to meet the criteria outlined above.
Michiana Sustain the Future Scholarship (amount varies): This scholarship is for graduate and undergraduate students in the IU South Bend Sustainability Studies program who graduated from a high school in the Michiana region, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and have a professed commitment to sustainability. Because, as part of its mission, Indiana University is committed to diversity, special consideration will be given to underrepresented populations, including but not limited to financially challenged students, and/or students with diverse cultural experiences. The Donors prefer underrepresented students who have demonstrated financial need. The Scholarship is renewable.
Sustain the Future Scholarship (amount varies): This scholarship supports graduate and undergraduate students in the Indiana University South Bend Sustainability Studies program who graduated from a high school in the Michiana region, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and have a professed commitment to sustainability. Indiana University, as part of its mission, is committed to diversity. Therefore, underrepresented populations, including but not limited to financially challenged students and/or students with diverse cultural experiences, receive priority consideration. Underrepresented students who have demonstrated financial need receive priority consideration. The scholarship is renewable.
Women's and Gender Studies Feminist Scholarship (minimum $2500): This award will be used to support undergraduate scholarships for students majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies at IU South Bend who have a "CAS"s standing of sophomore or higher and have completed at least 30 undergraduate credit hours at IU South Bend, with at least six of those credit hours in Women’s and Gender Studies.
Gabrielle Robinson & Mike Keen German Scholarship (amount varies): This scholarship supports undergraduate students enrolled at Indiana University South Bend majoring or minoring in German who demonstrate financial need and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Indiana University, as part of its mission, is committed to diversity, therefore underrepresented populations, including but not limited to financially challenged students and/or students with diverse cultural experiences, receive priority consideration. Students who graduated from a high school in the Michiana region receive additional consideration. The scholarship is renewable.
