Our internship program is designed for students who want to integrate the academic and theoretical dimensions of their education within the context of a work setting. Through the internship program, students gain practical experience related to future employment and they benefit from discussions of professional issues that are not usually covered in the classroom.
Students who are in the latter part of their academic careers and have met the following course prerequisites:
SOC-S161 Principles of Sociology OR ANTH-E1005 Culture and Society
Two Sociology courses at the 200-level or above (for SOC-S494) OR two Anthropology courses at the 200-level or above (for ANTH-A496).
Students have had internships in local hospitals, businesses, schools, and social service agencies. Some previous internship sites include the Youth Service Bureau, The American Red Cross, Logan Center, Memorial Hospital, Oaklawn Psychiatric Center, St. Margaret's House, Center for the Homeless, REAL Services, and Stone Soup Community.
Discuss your internship plans with Dr. Jay VanderVeen the semester before you plan to register; then enroll in SOC-S494, Field Experience in Sociology or ANTH-A496, Field Study in Anthropology. Devote 100 hours in the field and attend bi-weekly campus meetings. The internship may be repeated for a maximum of six credits, but only three credits may be applied to the major or minor in sociology. The internship may count for one of the 400-level seminars required of Sociology majors, but not for the 400-level seminar required of Anthropology majors.
The internship must involve work experience that is related to your educational or career goals. Internships may be part-time or full-time, paid or volunteer work.
