Internships provide students with an applied exposure to the works of a government or nonprofit organization. Although an internship is not required for completion of the MPA degree, they are highly encouraged. Many of our students have obtained post-graduation employment directly because of an internship they completed while in the MPA program. An internship provides you the opportunity to:
- Apply what you have learned in the classroom to real-world situations
- Gain valuable work experience relevant to you MPA and your career goals
- Network with professionals who can help mentor you, serve as a reference and a resource for career opportunities
Internships and other career opportunities for MPA students are regularly posted on the programs LinkedIn group either from fellow students and alumni or program faculty. The program also maintains a database of internship opportunities with organizations throughout the area. Both of these resources can be found at:
- Student and Alumni LinkedIn Group
- Internship Database
Up to three (3) credit hours of practicum/internship credit towards the MPA degree may be awarded to a student engaged in an off-campus internship or professional work experience. Students interested in pursuing an internship are encouraged to speak with their academic advisor or the MPA program director about finding an internship and the process of obtaining credit.
