Research interests include suicide, gerontology and developmental psychology (geropsychology), survivors of suicide, bereavement.

Recipient of: IU All University Teaching Award (President's Award, 1995), IUSB Distinguished Teaching Award (1994), IUSB Distinguished Research Award (2000), IUSB Eldon Lundquist Faculty Fellow (2000)

Recipient of: Shneidman Award, American Association of Suicidology (1990; for research and scholarly contributions to the field of suicidology by a person under the age of 40); Roger Tierney Award for Service, American Association of Suicidology (1999; for service to AAS and applied contributions to the field of suicidology); Charles T. Rubey LOSS Award, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago (2011, honors individuals who have made an extraordinary impact on the lives of survivors of suicide)
