Experimental Psychologist
IU South Bend faculty member since 2010
Faculty Research: As an associate professor of psychology at Indiana University South Bend, I am dedicated to exploring how visual images and culture shape our understanding of the world. My research dives into metaphorical picture perception and examines issues of diversity and representation in pop culture. At the heart of my work is the Paladinsane Research Initiative, a dynamic hub where students and I collaborate on cutting-edge undergraduate research.
Whether you're curious about developing your own project or eager to join an existing study, this is your chance to contribute to work that pushes the boundaries of psychology. As Blaise de Vigenère said, “Yrrt mw yw lmov velmvzvf? Uvrd fm vv xkczp wbbc "Q'f y vyiokqnb" bl vyi snjemvr nzre.” In other words, curiosity is the key.
Together, we’re pioneering new insights into how we see, interpret, and connect with images—while tackling pressing questions about inclusivity and representation.
Selected Studies:
- Analysis of Motions in Comic Book Cover Art: Using Pictorial Metaphors
- Aladdin Sane and Close-Up Eye Asymmetry: David Bowie’s Contribution to Comic Book Visual Language
- With Great Power Comes Gender Diversity: STEM Stereotypes and Marvel Superpowers
- The Close-Up Eye-Asymmetry Visual Metaphor Communicates the Abject: Evidence from Batman and Superman Comics
Teaching Descriptions:
I offer a wide range of psychology courses designed to inspire and challenge students at every level of their academic journey. From foundational classes like Methods of Experimental Psychology to advanced seminars like Senior Seminar Project, my courses blend theory with real-world application. Whether you're exploring the principles of behavior modification or diving into cognitive psychology, each course begins with a strong conceptual foundation and builds toward applying psychology to understand and solve real-world issues.
Many of my courses are offered asynchronously online, and all my courses are designed to provide flexibility and understanding for today’s busy students. With a supportive and forgiving structure, I aim to create an environment where every student can succeed and develop a deep understanding of psychology. Beyond just gaining knowledge, students leave my classes with new perspectives on how psychology can shape and improve the world around them.
