About Chemistry and Biochemistry
Graduates of Indiana University South Bend with degrees in chemistry or biochemistry pursue advanced studies in medical school, dental school, pharmacy and pharmacology programs, or graduate programs in various fields of chemistry and biochemistry. Other graduates immediately start rewarding careers in industry, such as working in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, perfume industry, food technology, adhesives, steel and lubricant industries, medical and agricultural diagnostics, instrumentation development, as well as pharmaceutical sales and textbook support.

Instrumentation
The department houses a variety of instruments for chemical and biochemical analysis and research, including instruments for gas chromatography (GC), GC-Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), micro plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES), raman spectroscopy, surface plasma resonance retractomery, cyclic voltammetry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (FT-NMR), 1H, 13C, 19F and broad band probe, fluorescence spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and various types of uv/vis spectroscopy, microplate reader, and gel electrophoresis equipment.
