African American Landmark Tour (Self Directed)
The African American Landmark Tour begins in the heart of South Bend’s first historic neighborhood, the West Washington National Register Historic District. It starts at the former Engman Public Natatorium, now the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center at the western end of South Bend’s Museum Corridor.
Whether experienced on foot, by bicycle or in a vehicle, the African American Landmark Tour immerses you in the civil-rights struggles that took place in the northern United States decades before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on that bus in Montgomery, Ala., or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. organized his first protest.
